open+all+hours   This study is of interest for numerous reasons. Its development was specifically linked to bed closures and it is the first study to demonstrate exactly how, and to what degree intensive home treatment can replace inpatient care. This model became a prototype for the current crisis resolution and home treatment model in England .The study is the only one not first published in a peer reviewed journal; instead it was published as a book published by the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health . The project benefited from the expertise of Dr John Hoult who imported his experience of home treatment from Sydney Australia  ( where he had conducted the classic Sydney study 1984) and was the service’s first consultant

Bed days were 43% less in the home treatment group whose costs were 30% cheaper.Home treatment enabled reduction of beds from 41 to 20. Despite its relevance , the study’s value was limited by methodological problems; particularly uncertainty about how comparable in severity the two groups were
