8. Cochrane Review of ” Crisis Intervention” ie intensive home treatment

Cochrane review of crisis intervention Joy Adams Rice edition 2   This review presents the conclusions regarding ability of intensive home to reduce admissions  in an odd way–as ” treatment failures” . 45% of patients had to be admitted withing 12 months: ie 55% of patients avoided admission.

Patient and family satisfaction was greater with the experimental home treatment. When measured, costs were lower in home treatment.

Design limitations of these studies include the following. 1. The experimental teams continued treatment longer term following the resolution of the crisis : unlike home treatment teams, they did not withdraw at this stage and refer to other teams for continuing care. 2 The control services were office based–unlike modern community oriented hospital services which have out patient teams -some of which make home visits–at least in England
