The way in which psychotropic medicines are managed in home treatment teams is vital to their success in keeping patients out of hospital. Because of the novel and unique nature of these services, the usual hospital based rules don’t always fit well, and policies are often improvised as situations arise. Hospital based managers don’t always appreciate the needs of teams. To address these issues, the National Mental Health Development Unit in England issued this guide following wide consultation with crisis resolution and home treatment team staff from different disciplines and also with carers ( meaning friends and family members who play a role in helping the team care for the patient)
