As in the 2019 Swiss RCT ( post 23), this study utilized the Zelen design in which participants are randomized before the consent stage.
IHT was compared to hospital treatment at 2 centres within the Amsterdam Psychiatric Emergency Service . The primary outcome was the number of days spent in the hospital between randomization and 12 months , with secondary outcomes measuring symptom severity , quality of life and patient satisfaction
Availability of IHT reduced the number of hospital days after 1 year by 36.6 %. There was no difference in the number of participants with an adverse event. There were 26 adverse events overall, 89% of which were suicide attempts. There were five deaths by suicide ( 2 deaths in each group between 6 weeks and 6 months and one in IHT after 6 months .
The IHT group showed lower measured symptoms of depression and anxiety at 6 weeks , but this effect disappeared at 6 months No other significant differences were seen in symptom severity, quality of life or satisfaction with treatment
